Firebird Griffins Get Their Revenge

Posted by Jo O'Daly on 11 February 2020

Griffins had already lost their first match with Plymstock Panthers by 7 goals, so they were ‘fired’ up and determined to take the second match.  The new pre-match warm up routine helped kick start the match with a fluent attacking game thanks to Courtney, Jaz, Maddie and Laura.  Some great passing into and across the circle kept Firebirds in the lead by 1 goal at the end of the first quarter.

Firebirds experienced some challenges at the defending end with some great play by Plymstock attach during the second quarter, and at times struggled to successfully getting the ball out of defence after some great turnarounds.  Half time score resulted in Plymstock taking the lead by 1 goal.

Some changes to defence re-positioned Ellen and Lizzie, and in attack Donna and Jo replaced Jaz and Maddie.  The third quarter saw a strong defence by Plymstock and the new attack couldn’t quite settle with Plymstock increasing their lead to 3 goals.  The final quarter settled and with some excellent interceptions by Ellen and Lizzie, attack bought these to fruition taking the lead once more.  A nail biting finish saw Plymstock take a late lead in the last 5 minutes of the fourth quarter, but Firebirds regained their advantage in the final two minutes to win the game 38-36.
